Who: The maestro of Belgian post-punk
crusaders Elefant and the guitarist of former
power-pop rockers The Van Jets

With 5-track EP called Songs Of Light And Shade, his first solo
work, Wolf Vanwymeersch shows his high-quality proficiency as
a solo singer-songwriter (mind you, he wrote and sang series of
striking songs before for the bands he was/is involved with).

He went into quarantine in his caravan during the 2020 lockdown
and let the muse do its work. He went on a journey into the sonic
space where mixed-emotions dreamers such as The National‘s voice
Matt Berninger and troubadour Devendra Banhart also have a caravan.
Listen to Queen Of Mine, Friendly Is Better and Not To and you will
experience what my ears experienced.

Opening track Understand, with its buoyant pace, is the only upbeat song here
while Fall From Grace differs from the other pieces, with its trippy synth glimmer.
Notable too are the subtle, yet rich orchestrations and arrangements of the whole extended play.

As I said before WOLF is a romantic at heart.
He wanders from daylight to twilight and back.

Turn Up The Volume: “I found my god in a garbage can at the corner
of the graveyard of man”
must be the opening line of the year. It also
starts a shadowy beauty of a song. Both moody and reflective, but also
graceful and intimately blissful. Pure singer-songwriter splendour. By the
way, I can’t remember when I heard a sparkling bouzouki sound and it
works subtly great here.

Wolf loves his Queen. She’s his muse.

Second taster from his upcoming solo debut EP

Wolf: says: “My daughter and I were playing in the garden and I was
singing this melody over and over: ‘Friendly is Better’. I recorded a little
demo: I wanted to juxtapose the acoustic/folky side (guitars) to the electric
bass and synth drums – which are in fact handclaps and a pillow as a bass
drum. Lyrically it’s pretty straightforward: I propagate the smile as the best
form of communication. I’m not turning the other (Christian) cheek, but
rather some kind of Buddhist open mind greeting. But in an agnostic way.

Buddha says: “Do the Anjali Mudra Press your palms together in front
of your chest and say a greeting term either in your own language or in
a language that the other person understands.”

Turn Up The Volume says: Wolf could be the singer of Belgian top band
