Album: I’LL BE YOUR MIRROR: A TRIBUTE TO THE VELVET UNDERGROUND
What: A star-studded (see tracklist below) tribute to iconic band
The Velvet Underground, and more specific to their 1967
masterpiece debut LP.
Release: 24 September via Verve Records
Producer: Hal Willner, a longtime Saturday Night Live co-operator. He passed away last year due to complications from COVID-19 at the age of, only, 64. He had just finished working on an all-star T. Rex tribute LP (AngelHeadedHipster came out last September). Furthermore, he was also the driving force behind this VU tribute longplayer.
Here’s the first taster with Kurt Vile covering track 5

Band: MANIC STREET PREACHERS
Active: Since 1986 / 14 studio albums,
including the new one.
Note: One of my all fav bands,
on record and on stage.
New album: THE ULTRA VIVID LAMENT
Out: 3 September 2021 / Pre-order info here.
Press info: ” ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is both reflection and reaction;
a record that gazes in isolation across a cluttered room, fogged by often
painful memories, to focus on an open window framing a gleaming vista
of land melting into sea and endless sky.
“The track is about the battle to claim meaning, the erasing of context within
debate, the overriding sense of factional conflict driven by digital platforms
leading to a perpetual state of culture war”.

New album: SOMEBODY’S HERO NOBODY’S SOLDIER
Out: This Friday – 25 June 2021
Pre-order info: here
The Moods about the new longplayer: “Our new album ‘Somebody’s Hero, Nobody’s Soldier’ is now finished. Due to the current situation we have had to delay the release and postpone the accompanying tour. However, don’t despair! We have a whole load of new material for you to check out in the coming months including live videos, new single releases and special acoustic versions of the new tracks. The new album marks a massive step forward in terms of writing and production and we can not wait for you to all hear it. In the meantime, check out our Spotify and Youtube channels for all of our existing music and we look forward to seeing
you all when this is all over and things return to normal.”
Turn Up The Volume says: The new LP is a multi-layered melting pot of drum & bass, acid house, hip-hop and R & B. A multi-voiced mishmash of raps, rants and chants. This united Manc team brings the multi-colored spirit of The Specials, the razor blade passion of Public Enemy and the 24-hour party addiction of of Happy Mondays to mind. They celebrate all things good in life, they protest against all things bad in life. They sing, spit and sneer about love and hate, (in)tolerance and (in)justice, equality and solidarity, life and death. Moodchester is the new Madchester. Welcome to the real world. Doors open this Friday.

Artist: PONY HUNT
Who: The musical project of New Orleans based singer/songwriter
Jessie Antonick. She’s consumed by her passion for songwriting,
building, and creating space—an eternally braided compulsion for
crafting and evoking emotion, for creating worlds where one’s spirit
can roam free—where a wandering mind can find home.
New album: VAR! – 2nd LP
Out: 25 July 2021 via Wing and Wing
Order info: here.
Info: “Antonick investigates the heart and mind entangled, looking to understand
how to be at home with one’s self, exploring the dualities of mind at play within her
journey of emotional connection, societal imposition, gender, lost identities and the
lesser understood– discovered variables amongst the seemingly ever still.”
Turn Up The Volume says: Pony Hunt creates music for shadowy midnight hours,
music to be played on a classic Wurlitzer jukebox, with all its bright colors, somewhere
in a late-night bar for only the lonely. Think Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Nancy Sinatra but
also Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen. Yes, pretty special.
Singles: Who Are You / Stardust
– WHO ARE YOU –
“I remember the warm sun shining on my face while feeling rather melancholy and nostalgic,
as I wrote Who Are You. A Roy Orbison inspired melody on my breath and the brief history of
a romance on the tip of my tongue.”
– STARDUST –
“A lifetime of external push and pull dictating who I am impelled me to explore my
relationship to societal imposition and gender identity through my own internal dialogue.”

Artist: Gary Anthony James Webb aka GARY NUMAN
Started his triumphant career in 1975 as the frontman of
Tubeway Army. He celebrated his 63rd birthday last March.
Album: INTRUDER – his 19th (!) longplayer
Released: 21st May 2021 – Order info here
Gary Numan: “Intruder looks at climate change from the planet’s
point of view. If Earth could speak, and feel things the way we do, what
would it say? How would it feel? The songs, for the most part, attempt to
be that voice, or at least try to express what I believe the earth must feel
at the moment.”
NME says: “in 2021, and with ‘Intruder’, he’s chiming with the times – and
sounding thrillingly relevant in the process… The electro-pop legend has seen
and done it all in 45 years – so when he says the planet’s knackered, as on this
bruised concept album, you’d better listen.” Full review here. Score: 4/5.
Turn Up The Volume: Numan still is an electric friend. His Tubeway Army
still is well oiled. No time yet to retire and leave us in your spaceship, Gary.

Band: TEENAGE FANCLUB (Scotland)
Active: Since 1989 / 11 albums (so far)
Album: ENDLESS ARCADE – 11th LP
Released: 30 April 2021 – order info here
Pitchfork: “The Scottish band’s eleventh album feels uniquely pensive,
even tentative. Nearly every song will have you humming along, though
few seem designed to grab your attention…. This thematic territory, self-
doubt, aging, nostalgia—spans the record and can sometimes make
Endless Arcade feel like a gloomy concept album.”
Full review here. Score: 7/10.
Turn Up The Volume: This could easily be their 5th or 10th album.
The jangly Teenage vibe still remains the Byrds same. Melancholic,
ruminant, melodic, and easy-listening. The band reflects on – a not
so bright – present and future. Despite the dreamy pop timbre, the
Scots share a lot to think about, while you hum along.

Band: BLACK MIDI
Who: Young tremendously compelling guitar-noise-explorers
from London scoring one of the best albums of 2019 with their
otherworldly debut Schlagenheim.
Out: 28 May via Rough Trade
Order info: here
Info: Black Midi began writing music for a new album in late 2019, not long
after the release of their debut studio album, Schlagenheim, in June of that
year. The band chose to have a less improvisational approach to writing their
second studio album, in contrast to Schlagenheim which was crafted around
jam sessions. Prior to the recording sessions for the album, guitarist Matt
Kwasniewski-Kelvin took a break from the band, citing a need to focus on his
mental health, he took part in the writing sessions for Cavalcade, however.
