Texans COATTAILS With Amplified Lullaby ‘CLOCKS & KNIFES’ From New EP…

Sensitive moments for the laziest day of the week…

COATTAILS formed back in early 2013 in Austin, Texas. The quartet released its self-titled debut LP two years ago and is about to launch a follow-up EP, entitled ‘Imaginary Friends’ on 9 November. Here’s one of the tracks. CLOCKS & KNIVES is a sepia colored lullaby centered around that nostalgic kind of warmhearted melodies that were played on jukeboxes in cozy bars back in the sixties. Frolicsome piano play, emotive tunefulness
and reflective vocals. It’s the electrically charged chorus and a captivating guitar solo somewhere in the middle that reminds us that it’s actually 2018 rather than 1966. This
is tender music with a healing force, therefore timeless. Catch the touching elegance

Eccentric Blues Junks WICKED SHIMMIES Gonna Booglarize You Baby With New Album ‘EXILE ON 5TH STREET’…

Brand new sonic impulses

27 October 2018

From Chickasha, Oklahoma here are WICKED SHIMMIES. This far-out 4-headed boogie blues beast that likes to roll, rattle, rumble, roar and reverberate will release their new album ‘EXILE ON 5TH STREET‘ next Tuesday on their Bandcamp page. An unusual two-song LP with each one, part 1 & 2, lasting for about 20 minutes. I’m quite certain these eccentric jam junks didn’t write these sonic mindfuckers the way a regular band writes music. I’m pretty sure they gathered somewhere in a dirty basement and started playing, just following their groovy gut feelings, their mixed-up souls and their insatiate appetite for producing deranged rumpus with an intoxicating buzz that does innocent people’s heads in. No special effects, no arty-farty idiocy for these experimental bohemians.

Undoubtedly inspired by the late genial Captain Beefheart, the incomparable master of freakish blues disaster WICKED SHIMMIES created a psychedelic marathon, a thunderous hullabaloo journey, a capricious hurly-burly serpent that moves viciously and mercilessly. So, if you’re looking for some real boogie crackpots capable of messing up your decadent parties and favorite madcap excesses or you want to test the flexibility of your neighbors’ nerves don’t hesitate to turn to this spaced-out Exile On 5th Street escapade. Trust me, your nightmares will never have sounded this maniacal, this kooky and this red-hot-jerky. Press the buttons and get booglarized baby. Here come the bats…

THE STROKES Released Second Album ‘ROOM ON FIRE’ 15 Years Ago…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

27 October 2018

Album: ROOM ON FIRE – the New York rockers’ second longplayer

Released: 28 October 2003 – 15 years ago

NME review: “Remember life before The Strokes? Guitar music sounded like something
you’d rather convalesce to than go out and rock to. Its stars looked like binmen and talked
like librarians… But just when all seemed lost (and music mags were closing down right, left
and centre, broadly due to the lack of anyone worth reading about), the cavalry arrived. Five young, sexy and skinny New Yorkers, The Strokes provided absolutely everything that had been lacking from modern rock‘n’roll… ‘Room On Fire’ is a refining and tinkering with The Strokes sound, a carefully calibrated attempt not to fuck up too early in the face of untold temptations. The results are still sleek, sexy and thrilling, with a tantalising promise of even better to come.”

Full review here – Score: 4.5/5

TURN UP THE VOLUME! says: The Strokes jumped into an empty period of guitar rocker bands and scored big time with their jingle jangle firework, cracking electricity and pretty faces…

THE AFGHAN WHIGS Released Their Soul-Stirring ’65’ Album 20 Years Ago…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

26 October 2018

Album: 65 – the Cincinnati band’s sixth LP

Released: 27 October 1998 – 20 years ago

ALL MUSIC review: “With 1965, the Afghan Whigs finally made the gritty soul record just always out of their reach, seamlessly integrating the R&B aspirations which have textured the band’s sound since the beginning, the music simmers with raw energy, its deep, dark grooves not so much white-boy as simply white-hot. Recorded in New Orleans, the album is plainly the product of its environment. Sultry, sleazy, and more than a little menacing, here more than ever, Greg Dulli is the frontman you love to hate, strutting and swaggering his way through standout tracks like “Something Hot,” “Uptown Again,” and “John the Baptist” with predatory aggression. (Who else would deliver a lyric like “I got the devil in me, girl” as though it were a pickup line?) Still, for all its cocksure arrogance, 1965 is nevertheless a sincere tribute to the classic music recalled by the album’s title, lyrics aside, even if Dulli did sell his soul, he’s somehow managed
to get it all back.”
– Score: 4.5/5

TURN UP THE VOLUME! says: The Whigs best album to my ears. Modern-day soul exorcism with Greg Dulli both victim and priest. A soul-stirring sensation. Top score!

IAN BROWN Returns Solo With Catchy Earworm ‘FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS’…

Brand new sonic impulses

26 October 2018

When 90s Madchester icons THE STONE ROSES announced their reunion back in 2011
I, like many other countless fans, expected them to release, finally, a new smashing album to confirm once and for all their brilliant debut longplayer wasn’t a one-hit wonder. We all thought wrong. They only came back to cash in big time by playing huge stadiums and big self-organized events. They gave us hope again with two new songs (Beautiful Thing / All For One) a couple of years later but actually ended up in fucking Wembley Stadium in London.

And now out of the blue, the Roses‘ frontman IAN BROWN returns announcing his first solo effort in over nine years, entitled RIPPLES, with three of the songs co-written with
his sons, who also play various instruments across the upcoming record. New first track FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS just arrived and already split fans’ perception. Some think is worth 0/10, others rave about it. After one spin I had actually no idea at all just what to think. Now that I heard it several times it keeps on ringing in my ears. It’s an irresistible earworm. You know one of those simple tunes that go on forever and ever and stick for
a very long time like first-class glue. Check it out here…

Even After 25 Years There’s No Doubt – Groove Masters THE DANDY WARHOLS Are Here ‘FOREVER’…

Daily fuel to load your sonic batteries…

25 October 2018

Portland‘s legendary jam masters THE DANDY WARHOLS have big plans for 2019.
The quartet will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a new (10th) LP and live shows.
To start the festive party here’s new single FOREVER . A slo-mo groove with a darkish undertone sounding like a hip classical symphony. Both enigmatic and magnetic. Both funky and ghostly. Let it be loud and clear… The Dandys are here to stay!

Frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor said about the accompanying clip for the new track:
“To get a feel for the massive length of our career in a three and a half minute video, I broke
it up into 3 parts and used Greek mythology as my guide. First, the labyrinth with the minotaur guarding the passage. A classic jerk doorman with a tiny nose ring making us wait as if he’s gotta make sure these are the right ghosts. Welcome to our lives. Next, the hermaphrodite angel (wearing a tie as subtle symbolism). Sweet and just wants to be helpful, not making a distinction whether it’s for better or worse. Finally, Cerberus the multi-headed dog, which represents our personal demons or whatever drives us to continue doing this.”

“All in all it sounds like and probably is a pretentious
lot of shit, but it sure feels good to do it anyway.”

Let’s roll…
