SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES ! ‘Kaleidoscope’ Album is 35…

31 July, 2015…

Time flies with the speed of an unstoppable turbojet-powered supersonic jet ! Already 35 years ago (August 1, 1980) Siouxsie and the Banshees released their third studio album ‘Kaleidoscope‘. It was a turning point for the band as original members Kenny Morris and John McKay had left and were replaced with two great musicians: guitarist, the late, John McGeoch (who also played with P.I.L.) and drummer Budgie (ex-Slits and Siouxsie’s later husband).

The new sound was lighter and more richly colored than before with synthesizers coming in. Siouxsie’s voice became more confident but still had that paranoia timber and her vintage haunting resonance. This make-or-break album turned out to be one of the The Banshees’ finest sonic achievements with amazing tracks as ‘Happy House’, ‘Hybrid’, ‘Lunar Camel’, ‘Red light’, ‘Paradise Place’ and of course ‘Christine’…

THE DANDY WARHOLS ! ‘Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia’ is 15…

31 July 2015…

DandyBohemain-800

The Dandy Warhols released their third album ‘Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia‘ on August 1, 2000. Fifteen years ago. One of their best and most versatile albums to my ears with its seducing sonic swagger (‘Bohemian Like Me‘), its trance like Velvet Underground echoes (‘Mohammed & ‘Solid‘), its vibrant addictive drive (Get Off), a ‘clap your hands’ country stomper (‘Country Leaver’) and a slo mo gospel love song (The Gospel). The critics loved the record too and the Portland band’s fan base grew extensively.
Happy Bohemia Birthday !…

Frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor back then: “We felt like we needed to make the last classic rock album. There’s so much guitar in the record. I didn’t want it to sound spineless and sappy. I wanted it to sound like a ‘guitar sound’ or pieces of solid wood, you know, kind of organic at heart thing. We used a strictly speed metal mixer from guy who got famous because he was Anthrax’s producer-mixer.”

Also great news is that The Dandys will play Belgium next September at Crammerock Festival with me in the front row of course. But let’s celebrate first these 13 tales…

PSYCHIATRIC METAPHORS ! Warning: Addictive Stuff…

Black - kopie-800

Artist: PSYCHIATRIC METAPHORS
Who/home: PM is actually the Do-It-All-Yourself project from psychedelic punk Sam Taylor out of Jersey City, New Jersey (US). For live performances he’s assisted by a real band with Mike Bongi (guitar, vocals), Pat Brenner (bass, vocals) and Mike Nugent (drums)…
Track: SLEEP DEPRIVATION – from thrilling debut album ’33 Thorne Street’
Score: Sam Taylor knows that memorable anything-could-happen-for-the-first-time musical decade called the ‘sixties’ quite well, the mind-blowing side that is – he doesn’t copy it, he translates it in today’s neo-psychedelic language – his key words are ‘fuzzy jingle jangle guitars’, ‘repetitive beats’ and ‘subcutaneous, addictive melodies’ – experience ‘Sleep Deprivation’ and you’ll understand his muse…

I’m sure you’re ready for the whole album now – enjoy the ride…

THE MACCABEES ! Magnificent Epic Journey…

30 July, 2015…

TrackOFday-800

Brighton’s glorious The Maccabees share ‘Spit It Out’, a new overwhelming track from brand new, fourth, album ‘Marks To Prove’ (out tomorrow, July 31). The song starts quiet with piano and frontman Orlando Weeks‘ trembling voice and grows slowly towards full orchestration and an irresistible epic finale. Titanic achievement !

My impressions: abundant guitar pop with titanic choruses – new album ‘Play For Keeps’ is one long, sunny ride of energized power pop tunes ( Spotify-link below) with ‘So Down Low’ as one of the vibrant highlights – enjoy the brand new, inventive video clip for the song here…

THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN ! Timeless Candy…

‘Just Like Honey’ by THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN !

Can’t wait for next Wednesday to see and hear The Jesus And Mary Chain play their classic debut album Psychocandy in full in Belgium. Their timeless magnus opus was released 30 years ago (February 28, 1985) and ‘Just Like Honey’ was released as the third single from the LP. Relaxing fuzzy splendour ! The video for the song is legendary too. Bobby Gillespie (frontman of my beloved Primal Scream) was still with Jesus & Mary at that time and hit a drum looking completely bored. Perfect ! Let’s roll…

HECK ! Extreme Dynamite Drones in Belgium…

July 28, 2015..

Black - kopie-800

HECK are an Ear-Deafening-Noisy-And-Inexhaustible-Energetic-Beyond-Belief-Hardcore-Four-Piece out of Nottingham (UK) formerly know as ‘Baby Godzilla’ until a Japanese cinema giant, owner of the ‘Godzilla’ brand, recently forced the group to change their name. I never heard of them until I found out they were billed to play (last Sunday, July 26) one of my favorite hometown clubs: Charlatan in Ghent, Belgium. I clicked on the YouTube-link on the club’s website and this headbutt came my way…

.
I couldn’t resist to experience in the flesh this kind of Diabolic Power and Splattering Hardcore Trash exploding in my surroundings so I headed towards the Charlatan. Shortly before the gig the band was still recovering from a very short sleep (after a gig in Sheffield the day before) and… a football game (yes, they’re British) on a square in the city of Ghent. But a bit later after a 30-seconds cymbal intro (!)… a Smoking Hot Volcano exploded merciless and both their vocalists/guitarists Matt Reynolds and Jonny Hall started their marathon across the venue. They ran ceaselessly up and down the stage an did a lot of eye-to-eye-meet-and-greets with heated spectators along the way. They climbed on anything that toke them higher (literally) while screaming, barking, shouting and torturing their guitars…

20-800
Jesus Ramone…

Reynolds is as tall as Joey Ramone and looks like Jesus Christ Fronting A Death Metal Choir and Hall is the most athletic guitar playing climber I ever saw. It’s a miracle that nobody got hurt, especially when they hit the venue’s ceiling…

2-800
Best view in the venue…

Meanwhile you actually felt the band’s concrete breaking hardcore drones go through your bones in your hyperkinetic shaking body. Exorcism Night ! Perfect ! On stage, bass player Paul Shelley and drummer Tom Marsh had all the room to produce and assist their haywire party pals in the erratic crowd with Supersonic Speed Whacks. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fastest band of them all? Bloody HECK is !

.
As you can read on their twitter account they eat death for breakfast and have sex for dinner and they sing about it, but trust me, these are four regular guys ! They just have an appetite for Extreme Loud Havoc (and sex and death) and are turning into Thunderous Demon Hunters from the moment they see a podium to jump on (and off). They give the audience their last drop of blood, their unfailing energy and a piece of their innermost psyche. They are for real. That Japanese cinema giant has the money and the power to take their name, but he will never ever be able to take their soul ! The Baby Monster Is Dead, Long Live HECK !…

7-800
Not looking back in anger…

So far the band released 3 EPs (check their website): Npag (2010), Oche (2012) and Knockout Machine (2015). They hope to release an album, DIY style, as soon as possible…

SISTERS ON WIRE ! Anthemtastic New Single…

28 July, 2015…

TrackOFday-800 - kopie

Band: SISTERS ON WIRE
Who/home: a thrilling and experienced pop rock trio formed early 2014 in Vilnius, Lithuania – Oleg (vocals, guitar, audio engineering), Filip (guitars) and Gintas (drums)…
Influences: from Coldplay to Foo Fighters – from Depeche Mode to Kasabian…
Track: RIDE – their brand new single !…
In their own words: “A sonic bridge between British indie rock melancholy and American arena rock punchiness, which eventually passes through mysterious Eastern European soul…”
In my words: ‘Sisters on Wire’ are highly gifted composers of exuberant indie rock spiced with catching pop patterns – they released their promising 5-track debut EP earlier this year (see Bandcamp link further on) and confirm their electrifying, anthemtastic songwriting potential now with ‘Ride’ – a delicious guitar drenched diamond shining richly from start to finish and peaking in between with a most energetic chorus – hello world, here’s Lithuania…
